The Benefits of Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy: Supporting a Healthy, Comfortable Pregnancy
Pregnancy is a beautiful and life-changing experience, but it can also bring about a range of physical discomforts. From back pain to sciatica, hormonal changes to postural shifts, many expectant mothers experience challenges as their bodies adjust to accommodate a growing baby. While some discomfort is part of the process, there are natural ways to support your body during this time—one of the most effective being chiropractic care.
Chiropractic care during pregnancy can provide relief from common pregnancy-related symptoms, promote a healthier pregnancy, and even improve the chances of a smoother labor and delivery. Let’s explore the many benefits of chiropractic care for pregnant women.
1. Alleviates Pregnancy-Related Back Pain
One of the most common complaints during pregnancy is back pain, particularly in the lower back. As your body changes, your center of gravity shifts, and your posture adapts to accommodate your growing belly. These changes can place significant strain on the spine, muscles, and ligaments, leading to discomfort and pain.
Chiropractic care focuses on aligning the spine and pelvis, which can help relieve back pain. By addressing misalignments (also known as subluxations), chiropractors can restore balance to the body, alleviate tension, and improve mobility, helping you feel more comfortable as your pregnancy progresses.
2. Reduces Sciatica Pain
Sciatica, which occurs when the sciatic nerve is compressed, is a condition many pregnant women experience due to the added pressure on the lower back and hips. The symptoms can include sharp pain, tingling, or numbness that radiates from the lower back down the leg.
Chiropractic adjustments can help relieve sciatica pain by ensuring that the pelvis is properly aligned, reducing pressure on the sciatic nerve. Regular adjustments can help reduce inflammation and improve nerve function, leading to a significant reduction in pain.
3. Improves Posture and Reduces Strain
As your belly grows, your posture naturally changes. Many pregnant women find themselves arching their backs or leaning backward to counterbalance the weight in the front, which can lead to muscle imbalances and strain. Over time, this can result in discomfort and even more severe musculoskeletal issues.
Chiropractors can help correct postural imbalances by realigning the spine and pelvis. This helps reduce muscle strain, improves posture, and promotes better alignment for your growing body. When your body is aligned properly, it can better manage the physical demands of pregnancy, reducing overall discomfort.
4. Helps with Symptom Relief from Pregnancy Hormones
During pregnancy, your body releases hormones like relaxin, which helps prepare the body for childbirth by relaxing the ligaments and joints in the pelvis. While this is a natural process, it can lead to instability in the joints and contribute to discomfort, particularly in the hips, pelvis, and lower back.
Chiropractic care can help by ensuring that the joints and ligaments are moving properly and maintaining their proper alignment. By improving joint mobility, chiropractic care can help prevent injury and reduce the discomfort associated with hormonal changes.
5. Supports a Healthier Pregnancy
Chiropractic care does more than just relieve pain—it also supports the overall health of both the mother and the baby. A well-aligned spine and pelvis help ensure that the nervous system functions optimally, which is crucial for overall health.
Additionally, chiropractic care can help improve circulation, which is essential for the growing baby. By improving blood flow to the uterus, chiropractic adjustments may support a healthier pregnancy by promoting better oxygen and nutrient delivery to both mother and baby.
6. May Help with Labor and Delivery
One of the most exciting benefits of chiropractic care during pregnancy is its potential to support a smoother labor and delivery process. Studies have shown that chiropractic care can help optimize pelvic alignment, which may allow for better positioning of the baby.
When the pelvis is properly aligned, it can create more space for the baby to move into an optimal position for delivery. This can potentially reduce the risk of complications during labor, such as a breech or posterior position, and may reduce the need for interventions like C-sections or forceps deliveries. Chiropractic care can also reduce the likelihood of a prolonged labor by helping the body function optimally during the birth process.
7. Promotes Faster Postpartum Recovery
After giving birth, many women experience lingering pain or discomfort as the body returns to its pre-pregnancy state. Chiropractic care can help speed up postpartum recovery by addressing misalignments caused by pregnancy and delivery. By realigning the spine, pelvis, and joints, chiropractic care helps restore balance to the body, reducing pain and helping you return to your normal routine more quickly.
8. Safe and Natural Treatment
Chiropractic care is a non-invasive, drug-free way to manage the physical discomforts of pregnancy. Unlike medication, which can have side effects for both mother and baby, chiropractic care focuses on natural healing and addresses the root causes of pain and discomfort. It’s a safe and effective treatment option for many pregnant women looking for relief.
9. Customized Care for Every Stage of Pregnancy
Chiropractors who specialize in pregnancy care are trained to adjust techniques and approaches based on the specific needs of pregnant women. Whether you’re in your first trimester or nearing your due date, your chiropractor will tailor their treatments to accommodate your body’s changes at each stage of pregnancy.

** Dr. Kelli has been trained in sacro-occipital techniques specific to treating pregnancy concerns. She studied with Dr. Rosen on the pelvic constraint technique which builds upon and goes beyond Webster technique. Pelvic constraint technique helps to correct sacral and pelvic subluxation that can cause pain and discomfort in the sascro-iliac joint as well as release ligament tension in the sacrotuberous and round ligaments. It may also address pubic symphysis pain if present.
Dr. Kelli is trained in Webster technique through her chiropractic curriculum at Palmer College but has not received post graduate certification in the technique.
